The Graduate Academic Advisor advises students on academic programs, curriculum, college and university academic policies and procedures. The advisor works directly with graduate students in a variety of disciplines to foster their academic success. The advisor will be the student's single point of contact on all matters from enrollment to graduation and their success will be measured primarily in terms of retention outcomes. The advisor will assist students individually and in groups via the phone, appointments, or off-site meetings. This position will also include responsibilities as the Designated School Official (DSO) for international students.
Position Information
The Graduate Academic Advisor advises students on academic programs, curriculum, college and university academic policies and procedures. The advisor works directly with graduate students in a variety of disciplines to foster their academic success. The advisor will be the student's single point of contact on all matters from enrollment to graduation and their success will be measured primarily in terms of retention outcomes. The advisor will assist students individually and in groups via the phone, appointments, or off-site meetings. This position will also include responsibilities as the Designated School Official (DSO) for international students.
- Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) for international students which includes ensuring international student success by assisting students in meeting class, graduation, and immigration requirements and serving as the point of contact for our international enrollment partners.
- Provides single point of contact advising service to an assigned group of students from admission through graduation to retain students. Effectively communicates the curriculum and graduation requirements for program, college and university academic policies and procedures.
- Timely processing of student registration each term.
- Works with Financial Aid to identify account holds and communicates options to students as well as develop academic progress appeal plans.
- Maintains accurate and timely student records and perform and interpret degree audits.
- Works closely with academic program faculty and participate in department meetings as needed.
- Provides career guidance and assist students in connecting with Career Services.
- Provides general information on the university that students need to be successful.
Experience, Skills and Competencies:
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Interpersonal Communication: Communicates effectively and appropriately. Uses good judgment as to what to communicate to whom as well as the best way to get that accomplished. Speaks in a clear and credible manner, selecting the right tone for the situation and audience. Listens to others and allows them to make their point.
- Student Focus: Personally demonstrates that external (or internal) students are a high priority. Identifies student needs and expectations and responds to them in a timely and effective manner. Anticipates and prevents delays or other things that can adversely affect the student. Keeps students informed about the status of pending actions and inquires about student satisfaction with products or services.
- Time Management: Prioritizes tasks and manages time to ensure that deadlines are met. Plans his or her time and sticks to those plans. Prevents or manages interruptions until the highest priority tasks are accomplished.
