We’re looking for an experienced Electrochemist, Chemist, Chemical Engineer, or Process Engineer who will help Carbon Direct accelerate carbon management based on proven expertise in hydrogen production and utilization. The ideal candidate will be able to seamlessly transition between different types of tasks, from detailed assessments of hydrogen conversion electrochemistry to strategic positioning of hydrogen technologies in multiple energy transition scenarios. Specifically, you will work in interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and business leaders to advise clients on hydrogen’s role in decarbonization. Your advice will support decisions to develop and deploy high performance hydrogen energy systems. Ongoing work will include: leading diligence efforts to uncover the benefits and risks of proposed hydrogen technologies in a decarbonizing world, contributing to firm-wide efforts to grow hydrogen’s role in high-quality carbon removals and reductions, educating and advising clients on the opportunities for hydrogen to advance decarbonization with a focus on electrolysis (and its role in “green hydrogen”), hydrogen use in the power and transportation sectors (combustion and fuel cells) and hydrogen’s role in net-zero fuels (eFuels & ammonia). You will also contribute hydrogen and electrochemistry know-how to the firm’s outreach efforts that inform policy and the general public.
Responsibilities
- Advise clients on hydrogen technologies. Help clients understand the opportunities and risks associated with electrolysis, fuel cells, thermochemical, and other hydrogen conversions by analyzing and communicating the lifecycle impacts, costs, and scalability of hydrogen-enabled approaches to decarbonization.
- Conduct due diligence of hydrogen technologies: Lead due diligence teams to ensure that projects result in high quality, low risk, high value decarbonization outcomes. Analyze foundational chemistry and electrochemistry, heat and mass balances, equipment specifications and design, construction and operational strategies, infrastructure integration, and project finance.
- Research and communication: Contribute to reports, policy briefs, and peer-reviewed publications. Actively engage with social media and participate in public events to communicate the engineering challenges and opportunities of decarbonization.
Experience
- Masters or PhD in chemistry or closely related field - electrochemistry, process engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering.
- Demonstrated work experience in industry, academia, or government. Depth of experience in electrochemical conversion of hydrogen, some breadth of experience assessing multiple technologies a plus.
- Communication - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical information into accessible forms and adapt styles to diverse audiences and different cultural environments.
- Hydrogen technology R&D. Expert knowledge of fundamental energy and material transfers and transformations that govern the performance of electrolyzers, fuel cells, and other hydrogen conversion devices. Able to address the dynamic operation and long-term degradation challenges facing hydrogen systems. Preference for experience in designing or deploying hydrogen energy systems.
- Systems and Data Analysis - Familiar with life cycle assessment (LCA) and technoeconomic analysis (TEA) methods for environmental impact and cost estimation of decarbonization technologies. Collaboration and Building Relationships - Relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences; Demonstrated experience (professional or non-professional) building and maintaining intra-and inter-institutional relationships with colleagues.
Compensation: $100,000-$160,000
- range covers multiple levels, as determined throughout the course of the interview process
