Carlisle Construction Materials has an immediate opening for a Scientist to join or Research and Development team in Carlisle, PA. The Membrane R&D Scientist is responsible for maintaining and improving EPDM and thermoplastic formulations used in the manufacturing of CCM roofing membranes, as well as leading our development of next generation sustainable technologies. Additional responsibilities include establishing specifications for raw material, formulations, products, and processing, and also working with Product Management on product design, performance requirements, and code approvals. The Scientist operates under the general guidance of the Membrane R&D Director and works closely with Membrane R&D Scientist, Analytical Scientists, R&D Technicians, and Production Engineers to advance projects and priorities for CCM.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducting laboratory research toward the development of new EPDM and thermoplastic formulations for new product development and providing support for the improvement of existing products.
  • Providing support to Manufacturing and Purchasing in determining root cause of product quality, production, and raw material issues and implementing corrective actions.
  • Identifying and implementing polymer formulation and process improvements that support strategic initiatives including quality enhancement.
  • Working with sales and marketing, manufacturing, purchasing, warranty departments and CCM staff on defined project priorities, project scope and future development directions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Polymer Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Practical laboratory experience in polymer formulation development and testing, and experience with associated processing technologies such as extrusion and calendaring (experience in EPDM formulation is a plus).
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of the physical, chemical, and mechanical behavior of thermoset and thermoplastic polymers.
  • Knowledge to analyze data, understand structure property relationships of polymers and conduct relative testing and evaluations.
  • Experience with FTIR, DSC, TGA and rheology analysis of polymers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
