Department Overview:
Applied Technology Services (ATS) is an internal service organization that provides high quality technical services and expertise on an as-needed basis to all lines of business. Based at San Ramon Technology Center, ATS is a multi-disciplinary team of approximately 120 engineers and technical personnel who perform work in the ATS San Ramon offices and laboratories, and in the field.
The Engineer role resides under the Calibration, Testing & Examination section at ATS.
Position Summary:
The Engineer is directly responsible for metrology and new inspection technology projects for ATS as well as other projects that may arise to support ATS’ vision to provide value high-value, innovative, proactive solutions to business units in a cost-effective way.
In the metrology capacity, the engineer will manage existing process improvement projects and identify new opportunities for the calibration laboratory. This will require the engineer to initially be on-site and familiar with the work process and current calibration methodology. The engineer will need to be able to manage projects from inception to completion with guidance from the section leader.
In the new inspection technology capacity, the engineer will manage new inspection projects for ATS. The engineer will be responsible for leading projects to evaluate these new inspection tools. This will include developing detailed test plan, standards, procedures, and training material for the projects. The engineer will provide recommendations to operationalize these new inspection tools at the end of each tool’s evaluation.
The engineer will participate in check-in meetings with stakeholders for respective projects and provide clear and constant updates to the project team. The engineer will be required to travel the service territory to implement, monitor and provide guidance for the projects.
Responsibilities:
- Independently manage and coordinate projects for metrology, new inspection technology, and or overall ATS.
- Performs routine engineering analysis and performs lead role in determining scope, schedule, budget and resources needed.
- Completes multiple projects concurrently. Prepares tests and studies. Evaluates performance of parts, assemblies or systems under simulated operating conditions. Records results and makes recommendations based on findings.
- Interface with clients regarding status of project or to collect more information. Ensure client expectations for project are met. Provide client support, as required.
- Design the test plans for assignments/projects and select standards, methods and protocols. Reviews design and test plans with senior peer or supervisor.
- Develops knowledge in a specific ATS area of specialty or discipline.
- Partners with senior technical peers to develop proficiency in a variety of issues. Assists with the more complex projects by compiling and providing technical data.
- Prepare presentations, reports and proposals for field projects, development work or potential new business.
- Prepare monthly progress reports on productivity, turnaround time, and other critical business metrics for respective assignments.
Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge in engineering research and testing concepts, theories, practices, methods, techniques.
- Basic investigative skills.

- Good organizational and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Collaboration and teamwork.
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with emphasis in a discipline related to assignments. (i.e., mechanical, civil or electrical engineering, etc.)
- Minimum of 3 years experience working as an engineer (or project engineer) directly responsible for managing engineer projects
- 10-15% travel
Desired:
- Master’s degree in Engineering with emphasis in a discipline related to assignments. (i.e., mechanical, civil or electrical engineering, etc.)
