JOB TITLE Mental Health Counselor
JOB PURPOSE The school mental health counselor provides individualized or small group counseling for diverse students in grades K-12. The ideal candidate will be able to service students in multiple grade levels and effectively provide students, staff and parents with clinical, therapeutic, and specialized counseling services as well as mental health referral resources.
The person in this position acts as a consultant to parents, teachers, and administrators. Additionally, the counselor will provide referrals when needed or required.

KEY RESULTS & RESPONSIBILITIES AREA
▪ Building relationships with students, families, and colleagues throughout the school community;
▪ Providing short-term individual and group counseling for students with social-emotional challenges, whether or not those challenges are clinically diagnosed;
▪ Identifies the mental health and behavioral needs of students;
▪ Providing behavior management assistance and crisis intervention when necessary;
▪ Conducts clinical interviews, assessments and observations;
▪ Communicating with families about their children, both sharing accounts from school and listening to accounts from home;
▪ Developing and maintaining a referral list of therapists and local resources for students who may need an assessment and/or long-term therapeutic support;
▪ Writes clinical reports and maintains confidentiality of records relating to studentsʼ treatment;
▪ Communicating with therapists and other outside professionals about students;
▪ Assisting in collection and sending of evidence for social-emotional testing for outside professionals;
▪ Actively participating in the Student Support Team meetings;
▪ Problem solving with teachers, parents, and outside professionals to develop appropriate supports and accommodation needs for students with social-emotional challenges;
▪ Developing and coordinating social and emotional learning plans with teachers;
▪ Participating in parent-teacher conferences, as needed.

Qualifications
Masterʼs Degree or Terminal Degree in Counseling required
Must be a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (license must be in the State of Florida)
Previous school counseling experience within a public or private school preferred
Strong facilitation, coaching, conflict resolution and problem solving skills
Good cross-cultural, interpersonal & communication skills and an affinity for interacting with diverse nationalities and cultures
Good written and verbal communication skills
Good time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks
