Occupational Summary

Develop and implement innovative and collaborative multi-media projects, including news and stories about Duke University that promote its people and programs, with a particular focus on illustrating Duke's activities in diversity, equity, and inclusion. This position is part of University Communications, an award-winning team of storytellers, creative producers and media strategists dedicated to advancing the Duke's mission through powerful storytelling and outreach.

Work Performed

Content creation (60%)

  • Create and produce materials for distribution on a variety of internal and external channels, to journalists and others, including news articles, audio, and digital features. Develop and implement strategies for bringing these materials to the attention of desired audiences through online networks and other systems.
  • Develop and maintain professional contacts and affiliations with the news media to facilitate and promote the dissemination of news and publicity about the University.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with university faculty, deans, and administrators within assigned subject areas; consult with faculty, deans and administrators on publicizing and promoting their activities to the news media.

Media relations (40%)

  • Track developments in the changing media world and identify opportunities for Duke to expand its outreach, such as with new programs or partners.
  • Monitor and analyze programs and activities at Duke University and develop appropriate strategies for publicizing them to the news media.
  • Assist in coordinating media briefings and other special events in cooperation with other communications staff.
  • Handle media inquiries and participate in a light after-hours rotation.
  • Contribute to issues and crisis planning and execution, special events and other University Communications activities.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.


Required Qualifications at this Level



Education/Training:
Work requires the ability to perform journalistic writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree.

Experience:

Work requires two years of directly related writing and/or experience in communications in a corporate, nonprofit or government setting, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.


Ability to speak, write and produce communications material in Spanish a plus.

Education

Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and relatedactivities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or a related discipline.


Experience
