Westat’s 9-week summer internship experiences will be hosted virtually, or on-site at our U.S. office-based locations.
Our interns can expect to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The program will begin on Monday, June 5, 2023, and end on August 4, 2023.

During the summer internship program, you will be assigned a project deliverable and will present during the final week of the program.
You will also attend educational programs and networking events.

This position may be remote or based on-site in Rockville, Maryland. The pay rate for this role is $25/hr.
Interns are responsible for securing their own housing should they select an on-site role.

In this role, you will support mixed methods research tasks in the area of maternal and child health for HRSA, CDC and NIH projects. You will be required to use your analytical skills to code, clean, and manage qualitative data, perform statistical analysis, conduct environmental scans, and provide subject-matter knowledge to the preparation of reports and findings. You will assist in the planning and development of communication materials for stakeholders related to maternal death. You will also assist in planning and developing trainings for mortality review committee members in almost 50 states and support activities for planning and developing an annual investigator meeting.

Additionally, you will participate in research coalition meetings led by site liaisons to understand coalition project goals and activities; work with staff members, scientific experts, and senior scientists to identify and support coalitions’ technical assistance needs; and participate in meetings with the steering committee and patient advocacy groups. Working with Westat’s researchers, you will learn industry and best practices as you develop professional skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods, analytic reasoning, communication, materials development, and task management.

Job responsibilities include:

• Assisting researchers with quantitative and qualitative data analysis, report development, and presentations for the project team and client.
• Support communication and training teams on assessments of existing communication and training materials, and reports of the findings.
• Assist staff members, scientific experts, and senior scientists in supporting the planning of an annual investigator meeting for Fall 2023 and participating in activities to support research coalitions’ technical assistance needs.

Basic Qualifications:

• Pursuing a Master's degree in Public Health or social/behavioral sciences.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in the area of maternal and child health and mixed-methods research, and an interest in community-engaged research.
