About Charm
Our mission is to reverse climate change and return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂, profitably. We convert waste biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into permanent, underground storage as carbon removal, or reform the bio-oil to produce syngas for fossil-free steel.
Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. In 2021 and 2022 we delivered thousands of tons of carbon removal via off-the-shelf pathways, and also deployed our first R&D prototype pyrolyzer of our own. In the next 18 months, we'll build and deploy the next pyrolyzer revision, demonstrate our fossil-free ironmaking pilot, substantially expand our operations in Colorado and put thousands of tonnes of CO₂e underground.

About the role
We are seeking a Software Engineering intern who loves to work up and down the stack on a collaborative team with a focus on robust and safe design. In this role, you will have the opportunity to support Charm’s R&D teams by integrating new sensors and developing backend and frontend features for the control software that powers Charm’s pyrolyzers and ironmaking plant. You will work closely with experienced engineers on our electrical and software engineering teams for 10-16 weeks over the summer months to ensure a better future for our planet.
Responsibilities
- As a member of the Charm software team, you’ll build the software to safely and efficiently operate our pyrolysis and ironmaking systems
- Prototype support for new sensor systems
- Own the design and implementation of new features end-to-end - with support from the team!
- Work across the stack - you’ll be programming Raspberry Pis and PLCs to interface with sensors; writing Golang code to extend our backend systems; and using React and Typescript to develop a clean and intuitive user experience. Prior experience with these technologies is NOT a requirement!
- Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers to test and deploy new features
Requirements
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Solid knowledge of CS fundamentals and data structures
- Systems programming skills - networking, concurrency, basic bit manipulation
- Attention to detail - safety is critical for everything we do at Charm
- Eagerness to learn and dive into new languages and technologies
These skills are a bonus, but not required
- Prior experience developing software that interfaces with a physical system
- Prior experience working on web servers or other networked applications
- Basic electrical wiring and lab skills
