About the Role:
The United States Attorney’s Office has a Victim Witness Unit (VWU) whose legislative responsibilities include communicating with victims and witnesses to assess their needs; providing routine resource referrals to crime victims, their families and witnesses; assisting victims by serving as a liaison with USAO prosecutors; providing witness management services for court related proceedings; and supporting outreach and collaboration efforts with local, state and Federal law enforcement, Federal investigative victim specialists, community organizations and social service agencies.
What you will do:
- Provide witness management assistance prior to, during and after trial. Typical assignments include assisting District personnel who are working directly with fact witnesses, providing assistance and support to ensure appearance for court, pre-trial conferences, and grand jury.
- Obtain pertinent information for files and documents necessary to arrange witness travel and reimbursements.
- Assist District personnel in assessing victims’ immediate needs for assistance. Identifies routine resources that are available and provides information regarding available resources to crime victims, their families, and witnesses. Contact Victim Witness Supervisor for assistance with unique or specialized victim needs. Provides information and assistance to include crisis intervention resources, assistance in securing medical treatment for injuries, information on legal rights and resources available, emergency housing options, employment services and transportation assistance.
- Provide attorneys with information regarding victims and witnesses. Schedules appointments, phone conferences and meetings with victims and witnesses as requested by the assigned attorney or as initiated by the victim or witness. Coordinates transportation and hotel arrangements to facilitate court appearances. Provides routine guidance and assistance in preparing victim impact statements, contacting Victim Witness Supervisor for assistance when necessary.
- Provide in-court support to victims during and prior to hearings and trials. Locate a safe, separate waiting area apart from defendants and their counsel. Communicate in a respectful and professional manner, answering questions, and listening to victim concerns and offering assistance/support when appropriate.
- Provide victims and witnesses with routine information about the criminal justice process and court proceedings. Facilitates victims understanding and expectations of the criminal process.
- Informs victims of significant case events such as decisions about charged offenses, the detention or release of a suspect(s), trial, verdict, and sentencing outcomes.
- Confer with USAO asset recovery staff regarding the status of restitution efforts. Assists crime victims in completing applications and required documents to access victim restitution funds or needed services.
- Collaborate with law enforcement personnel, Federal investigative victim specialists and social service providers in establishing assistance plans to support victims.
- Assist with victim assistance workshops, seminars, presentations and meetings with law enforcement personnel, Federal investigative agency victim specialists, state and local officials and members of community organizations.
Minimum Qualifications & Skills:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalency is required, undergraduate degree is preferred
- 2-3 years victim related, or case management experience preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software programs (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Teams).
- Must be able to meet and deal with people in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Basic computer and office equipment skills (such as operating a facsimile machine, scanner, copier, etc.)
